Enrique Emerges as Man Utd's Premier Target Despite Carrick's Impressive Interim Spell

Manchester United's hierarchy has zeroed in on one name as they prepare to appoint a permanent manager this summer: Paris Saint-Germain's Luis Enrique.

Despite Michael Carrick's stellar performance as interim head coach since Ruben Amorim's departure, ESPN reports that the PSG manager represents "the unicorn they have been desperately looking for" in Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS's eyes.

Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround, collecting nine victories, two draws and two defeats across his opening 13 matches. The Red Devils now sit within touching distance of Champions League qualification, a transformation that has thrust the former midfielder into genuine contention for the job on a permanent basis.

Yet the club's preference appears to lean toward a manager with elite-level tactical pedigree. With Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp effectively ruled out due to their ties to City and Liverpool respectively, and Carlo Ancelotti seemingly committed to extending his Brazil role ahead of the World Cup, Enrique stands as the sole candidate capable of delivering everything United crave.

When pressed on when he might expect clarity from the club, Carrick remained characteristically measured. "I'm not sure, to be honest," he admitted. "Genuinely it's not something in terms of deadlines that I'm really chasing. I think it'll become clear when it's going to become clear. I'm here at the moment to help the team and help the club get results. That's genuinely all I'm focused on right now."
