United's Summer Purge: Eight Depart as Newcastle Circle Ugarte

Michael Carrick's impressive turnaround at Manchester United has put the club in striking distance of Champions League qualification, and that silverware would give them considerable financial muscle in the transfer market. But to truly reshape their squad this summer, United are preparing a ruthless clearout.

Eight players are set to depart Old Trafford this summer as part of what's being described as a wholesale cull, with the club targeting around £100m in total sales revenue. The departures will allow United to focus on their stated priorities: overhauling a leaky midfield, bringing in a left winger, and bolstering their defensive options after last summer's work on the goalkeeping and attacking departments.

The exodus will be a mixed bag financially. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford are all expected to be sold, with United hoping to convert Rashford and Hojlund's existing loan arrangements at Barcelona and Napoli respectively into permanent deals worth £64m combined. Onana's departure is crucial to meeting Profit and Sustainability regulations, with the keeper needing to fetch at least £19m.

Not all the business will be profitable. United anticipate losses on both Ugarte (signed for £50.8m) and Zirkzee (£36.5m), though shifting Casemiro's eye-watering £350,000-a-week wages—along with Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia departing on free transfers—will provide some relief to the books.

Ugarte's struggles have been particularly acute. The Uruguay midfielder has failed to justify his investment and is actively seeking an exit, with United placing an optimistic £35m price tag on him. Juventus are leading the charge, but Newcastle are among the interested parties monitoring developments. Galatasaray have also thrown their hat in the ring, offering the 23-year-old guaranteed playing time and a starring role in their Champions League ambitions—a significant draw given his limited opportunities in Manchester.

Ajax and Sunderland have been mentioned in dispatches, though both are considered unlikely destinations. With midfield reinforcements essential once Ugarte departs, United's summer could prove a defining one under Carrick's stewardship.
