Manchester United's summer shopping list at West Ham is facing a decidedly chilly reception, with the Hammers' new power broker drawing a firm line in the sand over how many of his stars will be heading for the exit.

Having already wrapped up Ederson from Atalanta for £35m, the Red Devils are hunting reinforcements in midfield following Casemiro's departure and lingering uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte's future. Aurelien Tchouameni remains a pipe dream, while Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga has surfaced as a contingency option. But Mateus Fernandes has been the primary focus—until now, that is.

The conversations between United and Fernandes' representatives are progressing smoothly, with the player himself enthusiastically receptive to a move to Old Trafford. Yet the stumbling block remains firmly rooted in boardroom negotiations. West Ham are starting from an £85m asking price, having initially held out for closer to £100m. United, unsurprisingly, are opening negotiations well below that figure—a familiar dance in the transfer market.

Daniel Kretinsky, now the club's de facto owner and the decisive voice this summer, is determined to prevent a wholesale exodus that could derail West Ham's Championship promotion push. Fernandes appears to be the one player he's willing to sacrifice at the right price, but beyond that, the gates are locked.

Jarrod Bowen, the captain, is thought to be amenable to staying put and leading the charge back to the Premier League. His commitment hinges largely on whether West Ham can demonstrate genuine ambition by retaining their other key assets. There is genuine belief internally that the skipper can be persuaded to remain, provided the club doesn't hemorrhage talent elsewhere.

For Manchester United, that's where the complications multiply. Their interest in Crysencio Summerville, identified as their top left-wing target, faces a wall of resistance. The Dutch winger is expected to command a £50m fee, with his contract running through June 2029. How seriously United pursue that avenue may well depend on the Marcus Rashford situation, particularly following Barcelona's decision not to activate their €30m purchase option when it expired on Monday.

Kretinsky's message is unmistakable: one big sale this summer, not two.
