Rashford's Old Trafford Future Takes Positive Turn as United Prepare for Striker's Potential Return

Manchester United are taking concrete steps to bring Marcus Rashford back into the fold for the upcoming campaign, with recent developments suggesting a significant shift in the club's approach to their homegrown talent.

After spending last season on loan at Barcelona—a deal that included a €30m (£26m) option to buy—Rashford appeared destined to remain in Catalonia. The La Liga side were keen to negotiate fresh loan terms, and the player himself had Barcelona high on his wish list. Yet United's hierarchy made it clear: any permanent departure would come at a price.

That stance appears to be softening, at least on the surface. Earlier this week, reports emerged that United and Rashford had begun "opening doors to restarting the process" of integrating the 26-year-old back into Michael Carrick's plans, despite the club's continued willingness to sell if the right offer materialised.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano provided fresh insight into the situation: "Marcus Rashford is now showing positive messages to Manchester United about the possibility of staying at the club." However, Romano stopped short of guaranteeing anything. "The window is still very long—eight weeks—so we can't guarantee that Rashford is 100% staying at United. But Rashford is not closing doors to the possibility of restarting with United, to be part of the preseason under Michael Carrick. So Rashford is open, and that's a very good message."

The shift follows a meeting between Rashford's representatives and United officials two days prior to Romano's update. That conversation, by all accounts, went well. Romano explained the position: "The message was sent directly; agents of the player and a Man United meeting took place two days ago, and it was a positive meeting. So now Rashford has the chance to continue at Manchester United. Then, if a good proposal for Rashford and for United arrives, Rashford could still leave the club in the summer transfer window. If he doesn't, maybe United could find one more player to use. So, United have a wildcard in Rashford, waiting to see what's going to happen on the market."

Behind the scenes, United are taking no chances. Director of Football Jason Wilcox has instructed staff to prepare contingency plans should Rashford remain at Old Trafford. According to sources, Wilcox has tasked his team with carrying out fresh work on how to reintegrate the forward into the squad, whilst Carrick himself has been involved in discussions about bringing Rashford back into the first-team environment if necessary.

The upshot: United have made their position abundantly clear. They would genuinely welcome Rashford back, but they're taking nothing for granted. The club are fully prepared for either scenario—a summer departure should an acceptable bid arrive, or Rashford's return as a significant part of their attacking plans.
