United's Summer Midfield Rebuild Takes Shape as Anderson Tipped for City Move

Manchester United have zeroed in on their two main midfield reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window, though they're bracing themselves for disappointment on one high-profile target.

Having already splashed around £230m on Senne Lammens, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha—and upgraded their goalkeeping department—the Red Devils are now turning their attention to the engine room. Michael Carrick's side faces a significant reshuffle in midfield following Casemiro's confirmed departure when his contract expires this summer, with Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo potentially following him out the door.

According to The i Paper, United have settled on Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton as their favoured recruits from a shortlist that also included Elliott Anderson. Both have featured on the club's radar as marquee options for some time now, but there's a growing conviction that Anderson will reject a move to Old Trafford in favour of Manchester City.

Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is casting a wider net across Europe for more economical alternatives who could complement the two primary targets, should the opportunity arise.

Baleba has long been monitored as a successor to Casemiro, despite United lacking the financial firepower to move for him last summer. The midfielder now appears within reach as the club's summer planning advances.

Meanwhile, Barcelona's Marc Casado has also cropped up in United's considerations, though his prospects of making the switch appear uncertain. The 22-year-old has managed just 10 starts from 19 appearances for the Catalan outfit this season, struggling to break through a midfield stacked with established names. Atletico Madrid have also registered their interest in Casado, viewing him as a potential replacement for Conor Gallagher as they look to bolster their midfield ranks.

For Casado, departing his boyhood club would represent a significant decision, though a club of United's stature might prove tempting should Barcelona continue to limit his opportunities.
