Man Utd Ready to Smash Through £40m Barrier for Atalanta Midfielder Ederson

Manchester United are ramping up their efforts to land Atalanta's Ederson, with fresh reports suggesting the club is willing to breach the £40m barrier to secure their long-standing midfield priority.

The Serie A midfielder has been on United's radar for over eighteen months, and with Manuel Ugarte expected to follow Casemiro out the door, the Red Devils are plotting a significant midfield overhaul ahead of their Champions League comeback. Ederson represents a more economical option compared to other targets like Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali, and Elliott Anderson, though the club could yet pursue multiple signings in that area.

The race for Ederson's signature has intensified considerably. Atletico Madrid appeared the frontrunners until recently, but their reluctance to exceed £39m has prompted them to pivot toward Wolves' João Gomes instead, with a deal at that price point reportedly close to completion.

Arsenal have now emerged as rival suitors. The Gunners' sporting director Andrea Berta is said to harbour significant admiration for the midfielder, and the club is currently engaged in talks regarding a summer move while assessing the financial commitment required to tempt Atalanta into negotiations.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has indicated United currently hold the advantage in the pecking order, having been first to move for the player. He revealed that fresh discussions are scheduled for next week, with United now preparing to breach the €40m threshold to outpace their competitors. However, Pedulla noted that United must first reach agreement on wages with Ederson's representatives—a process Atletico Madrid had already navigated before hitting obstacles over valuation.

Reporter Nicolo Schira added that United are actively pushing to conclude the deal, with a contract through 2031 already prepared and €45m earmarked to secure Atalanta's green light for negotiations.
