Manchester United Eye Cut-Rate Nmecha Deal as Midfield Rebuild Gathers Pace

Manchester United's midfield overhaul this summer could soon include a swoop for Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, with intermediaries signalling that a reduced fee might make the 25-year-old German achievable.

The Red Devils have already secured Ederson from Atalanta for £35m to reinforce Michael Carrick's engine room, yet the Old Trafford hierarchy remain intent on supplementing that arrival with further central midfield reinforcements. With Casemiro departed and Manuel Ugarte seemingly heading for the exit, the need for fresh legs in that area is pressing.

United's pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson stalled following Manchester City's substantial £120m approach, prompting a pivot towards other targets. Fernandes has emerged as a focal point, though competition from Tottenham and Real Madrid complicates that particular avenue.

Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy product, represents an intriguing alternative. The 25-year-old moved to Wolfsburg in 2021 before Dortmund acquired him for approximately £25.9m in 2023. Despite penning a fresh contract extension through 2030 in March, the Bundesliga club's grip on the midfielder appears loosening.

His current deal reportedly features a release clause of €80m (£69m) for 2027, descending to €70m (£60m) in 2028, with Dortmund seemingly open to negotiating closer to that latter figure this summer. Yet intermediaries working on the situation have now indicated to interested parties that a fee around £52m could unlock a transfer.

Whilst Barcelona and Real Madrid have expressed their admiration, sources suggest a Premier League return holds considerable appeal for Nmecha and his representatives. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City have all been approached, with none outright rejecting the prospect.

Those orchestrating Nmecha's future believe genuine market interest exists this summer, with both English and Spanish suitors potentially converting their enquiries into concrete offers. A return to English football appears a decidedly realistic proposition for the midfielder.
