Ronaldo in Advanced Talks Over Old Trafford Return, Ready to Take Pay Cut

Cristiano Ronaldo is negotiating a summer move back to Manchester United, with both camps reportedly edging towards a breakthrough agreement.

The Portuguese star departed Old Trafford in acrimonious fashion at the tail end of 2022, having conducted a damaging tell-all interview with Piers Morgan that aired grievances with Erik ten Hag. His contract was subsequently cancelled by mutual consent, paving the way for his shock switch to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr.

The Saudi move came with eye-watering financial terms—a minimum of £492m across his two-year contract through June 2027. Yet discontent has festered in recent months. Al-Nassr finished third in the domestic league and exited the AFC Champions League at the semi-final stage. More recently, Ronaldo has grown increasingly frustrated by the Saudi Public Investment Fund's preferential investment in rival Saudi clubs, reportedly prompting him to withdraw from Al-Nassr's match against Al-Riyadh on Monday.

Whilst Al-Nassr have made minimal signings this winter—securing only 21-year-old Iraqi centre-back Hayer Abdulkareem—competitors like Al-Hilal have bolstered their ranks substantially, adding Karim Benzema and other marquee names.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Ronaldo is now in active dialogue with Manchester United about a summer departure. The 39-year-old harbours a €50m release clause at Al-Nassr, which has attracted interest from Major League Soccer franchises, but his overriding preference is to conclude his career where it flourished most.

United's hierarchy have apparently concluded that Ronaldo's contentious exit stemmed from personality friction with ten Hag rather than systemic issues at the club. With that particular regime now in the past, the board sees an opportunity to reclaim his proven finishing ability and leadership credentials.

Negotiations between Ronaldo's representatives and United's management are advancing steadily, with both sides prioritising sporting fit ahead of financial considerations. Crucially, Ronaldo has signalled his readiness to accept a substantially reduced wage package compared to his Al-Nassr earnings—a significant concession that oils the wheels of the deal.

United have reportedly sketched out plans for a compact but high-intensity contract, with the club prepared to hold fire on formal announcements until the Saudi Arabian season concludes. Should the move materialise, it would rank among football's most remarkable comebacks.
