Man Utd Eye Chelsea's Acheampong as Carrick Plans Summer Rebuild

Manchester United have set their sights on Chelsea's Josh Acheampong as Michael Carrick prepares for a significant summer overhaul at Old Trafford.

The newly appointed permanent manager has steered United into third place with Champions League football secured for next season. Carrick's contract extension through 2028, confirmed on Friday, has provided the club with the financial firepower needed to pursue multiple targets, with at least two midfielders, a left-back, and a left-winger on the shopping list.

A centre-back addition could also materialise if funds allow, with Acheampong emerging as a realistic option despite Chelsea's public insistence that the youngster remains off-limits. According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, the Blues have repeatedly stressed the defender's unavailability, though the player himself may have other ideas.

Speaking on The United Stand, Jacobs explained the situation: Chelsea's stance is resolute—Acheampong represents an untouchable prospect from their perspective. However, the defender faces uncertainty over his game time next season with Chelsea plotting the arrival of another starting centre-back. Should manager Carlo Ancelotti move away from his preferred three-at-the-back system, Acheampong's minutes could dry up considerably. The player is understood to be willing to explore alternatives should regular football prove elusive. Manchester City have also registered their interest.

On the midfield front, United have been tracking Atalanta's Ederson for over a year. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided fresh insight into the situation, revealing that United's recruitment team viewed Ederson as a serious target during last summer's window. Atalanta's reluctance to sell at that time proved decisive, but circumstances have shifted.

Ederson has informed Atalanta he will not commit to a new contract and is actively looking to move on. The Italian club, having already sanctioned several departures that summer, are now prepared to negotiate. While United have held discussions about Ederson during recent recruitment missions to Italy—alongside conversations regarding fellow midfielder Tonali—Romano stressed that no deal has been finalised. The midfielder remains under consideration rather than a done arrangement.
