Greenwood Roma Move Would Hand Man Utd Bumper Payday as Carrick Readies Three for Exit

Manchester United stand to pocket a significant sum should Roma succeed in their pursuit of Mason Greenwood, with the Serie A club preparing to test Marseille's resolve in the coming days.
Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that the Italian outfit are readying "initial contacts" to explore the feasibility of bringing the 24-year-old to the Stadio Olimpico. Gian Piero Gasperini has identified Greenwood as his primary attacking target, though Roma face a steep asking price exceeding €50 million – a figure that reflects Marseille's awareness that half the proceeds will flow back to Old Trafford.
United retain a 50 per cent sell-on clause following Greenwood's departure in July 2024, when he completed his €31.6m move to the Ligue 1 club. His performances in France have vindicated the switch, with the academy graduate accumulating 21 goals and eight assists across 42 competitive appearances this season. Over his full campaign in French football, he managed 21 goals and five assists in 34 league outings.
The winger's path to Marseille followed a turbulent period at Old Trafford. Suspended in January 2022 following allegations involving a young woman, Greenwood faced charges including attempted rape and assault before the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued proceedings in February 2023.
While speculation has periodically surfaced regarding a potential United return, such a scenario now appears distinctly improbable given the Roma interest and Greenwood's continued upward trajectory.
Domestically, new permanent manager Michael Carrick has wasted little time reshaping his squad. Three players have been earmarked for summer departures, with Manuel Ugarte leading the exit queue. The midfielder, signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million, is expected to move on, though recouping the full investment looks unlikely.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, recently returned from a loan spell at Trabzonspor, is also surplus to requirements and the Turkish club harbour interest in a permanent arrangement. Striker Joshua Zirkzee completes the trio heading for the door, with his Bologna form failing to justify the investment and Italian clubs circling.
