United Narrow Midfield Hunt to Three Key Targets as Guimaraes Deal Talk Collapses

Manchester United have crystallised their midfield recruitment plans, settling on three leading contenders to fill the void left by Casemiro's summer departure.

The Brazilian's exit once his current deal concludes has long been on the radar, forcing United's hand in the transfer market. Despite the considerable progress made under interim manager Michael Carrick—bolstered by the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens—a midfield overhaul remains essential if the club is to take the next step.

The hunt for Casemiro's successor has thrown up numerous possibilities, though recent reports suggesting Bruno Guimaraes had already penned personal terms with United have proven wide of the mark. Graeme Bailey, speaking to TEAMtalk, dismissed the notion of a done deal, insisting Newcastle have no intention of opening the floodgates on player departures come summer.

"People think that Newcastle are somehow ready to open the floodgates and let all of their players leave this summer. That is simply not the case," Bailey explained. He added that whilst Guimaraes's representatives would naturally explore options, suggesting the midfielder has agreed to leave is "wide of the mark, from what I am told."

Respected journalist Andy Mitten has similarly suggested Guimaraes may simply be using United's interest as leverage to secure improved terms at St James' Park.

The Daily Mail now reports that United have pared their list of candidates, identifying three standout options: Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton. All three represent realistic targets to succeed the departing South American.

With Manuel Ugarte potentially heading for the exit door as well, United may yet need to dip into the market for an additional midfield recruit before the transfer window slams shut.
