United Turn to Scott After Fernandes Rebuff; De Zerbi's Vision Seals Spurs Swoop

Manchester United's midfield recruitment drive has hit another snag, with Matheus Fernandes completing his move to Tottenham Hotspur instead of Old Trafford. The 21-year-old West Ham midfielder has become the latest target to slip through United's fingers this summer, forcing Michael Carrick's side to reassess their options in the market.

United's plans for a substantial midfield overhaul have already encountered multiple obstacles. They've secured Ederson Silva from Atalanta for approximately £38m, but the injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte has thrown a spanner in the works. The departure of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City compounds their frustrations.

Fernandes had emerged as United's primary target following Ederson's arrival, yet the protracted negotiations proved unfruitful. West Ham's £85m asking price created a significant hurdle, particularly with Tottenham willing to match those demands. United's reluctance to stretch their finances to that level ultimately cost them the race.

David Ornstein confirmed on Tuesday that Spurs had secured their man, submitting the highest offer at approximately £85m guaranteed. The midfielder opted for north London, a choice that extended beyond mere financial considerations.

According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, Fernandes was persuaded by De Zerbi's strategic vision for Tottenham. The opportunity to remain in the capital also factored heavily into his decision. His representatives stressed that the move represented more than simply chasing the biggest cheque; rather, the midfielder was convinced by the direction of the project and the Italian manager's plans.

With Fernandes off the table, United have identified fresh targets. Bournemouth's Alex Scott has emerged as an alternative option, with journalist Ben Jacobs reporting that United intend to explore a move for the midfielder. Bournemouth value Scott at around £80m and are prepared to offer him a new contract featuring a release clause, though Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea are also monitoring the situation closely.

United's shortlist extends beyond Scott. Aurélien Tchouaméni and Carlos Baleba remain under consideration, whilst Sandro Tonali—another target for Spurs and City—is appreciated internally, though the deal's financial requirements would need to decrease for United to pursue it seriously. Sander Berge has also been discussed as a possibility.
