Man Utd and Chelsea Launch Serious Bids for Alvarez as Arsenal Face Striker Shuffle

Manchester United and Chelsea have tabled concrete offers to Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez, threatening to derail Arsenal's pursuit of the Argentine frontman, according to Spanish reports.

All three Premier League clubs are hunting for firepower up front. Manchester City's Erling Haaland leads the goalscoring charts on 20, with Brentford's Igor Thiago second on 16. Chelsea and United's Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo sit joint fifth with eight apiece, whilst Arsenal—sitting top of the league—boast no representatives among the Premier League's top 20 scorers. Leandro Trossard and Viktor Gyokeres manage just five league goals each for the Gunners.

Reports from Spain suggest Arsenal had recently emerged as frontrunners to land Alvarez from the Madrid outfit, but the Red Devils and Blues have now muscled in with formal bids. The 21-year-old has managed seven goals and three assists across 21 La Liga appearances this season.

Barcelona are also in the mix, though the Spanish media's assessment of the situation is telling. The report notes that United and Chelsea represent "two projects with considerable financial resources, salaries far exceeding what Barca can currently offer, and a guaranteed leading role," with the Catalan club "aware of this situation and acknowledges that it starts at a clear disadvantage."

The wage differential is proving decisive. Despite the allure of Camp Nou, Alvarez's decision could hinge on the financial package on offer, with both English clubs "pushing to complete the signing." The report adds that "both clubs see Julian Alvarez as a complete striker, capable of making an immediate difference and leading an attacking project. The pressure from England is intense, and the message is clear: there's a rush to decide."

Gary Lineker, the former Tottenham and England striker, believes an Alvarez arrival at the Emirates would prove transformative. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker suggested that adding the World Cup winner to compete with Gyokeres "would be game over" for their rivals.

"They've not got anyone really banging in the goals on a regular basis," Lineker explained. "Gabriel Jesus has come back and scored one or two but there was a reason they needed to sign a new No. 9 in the first place."

He acknowledged Jesus's work rate and consistency in chasing down loose balls, though suggested the Brazilian can be streaky—"when he's on he's on but when he's off he a bit of a confidence player."

Lineker dismissed much of the social media speculation as "complete nonsense," but warmed to the Alvarez prospect. "Now that is the sort of player you know can handle the big occasion – he's a World Cup winner for crying out loud. Someone like that at Arsenal would be game over. But they do need one or two of these current forwards to start scoring on a reasonably regular basis."
