Carrick Eyes Rashford Reunion If Given Permanent Role, But Barcelona Hold Strong

Marcus Rashford's potential return to Old Trafford has become the subject of fevered speculation, with interim boss Michael Carrick apparently keen on reuniting with his former teammate should he land the permanent gig.

United shipped Rashford out to Barcelona on loan last summer, following a previous temporary stint at Aston Villa. The 28-year-old has proven a reliable operator for the Catalan side this season, featuring in 30 matches across all competitions with 16 starts to his name. His goal tally of nine, coupled with nine assists, represents a respectable return for a squad player at Camp Nou.

The Telegraph's Jason Burt reports that Carrick, who played alongside Rashford under Louis van Gaal—the manager who handed the forward his debut in 2016—would welcome the prospect of bringing him back if he secures the top job permanently. Barcelona do possess a £30m option to convert the loan into a permanent deal come summer, but Burt suggests Carrick would rather see his former teammate back in red.

"Even so, Telegraph Sport can reveal that if Michael Carrick is retained as United's head coach beyond this season, then he would like his former team-mate back," Burt wrote. "Given the manner of Rashford's departure, and despite Ruben Amorim being dismissed, it is hard to see that happening."

However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has thrown cold water on any concrete expectations, emphasising that too many variables remain unresolved. Barcelona, he confirms, have made their intentions clear to Rashford and his representatives—they want him staying put. The England international, Romano notes, is content with life in Catalonia.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "Many questions on Marcus Rashford. Could he return to Man United at the end of the season? It's too early to say because we still don't know what kind of Man United will be. Barcelona told Marcus, his brother, and his camp that they want him to continue here. They're very happy with Rashford, and Rashford is happy there. We have to see what kind of Man United will be at the end of the season – who will be the coach, whether Carrick stays, and what the club wants to do. There are many things to clarify before saying this is happening or not happening."

In other words: plenty of moving parts, plenty of uncertainty, and Barcelona aren't exactly rolling out the welcome mat for Rashford's departure.
