Heskey Makes Case for Cunha to Lead Man Utd's Attack Against Everton

Emile Heskey has thrown his weight behind Matheus Cunha to lead Manchester United's line when they face Everton, suggesting the Brazilian's presence would inject greater dynamism into Michael Carrick's attack.

The former Liverpool striker acknowledges Sesko's recent upturn in form—five goals in his last six appearances—but contends that Cunha represents a more complete fit for Carrick's system. Speaking to aGamble, Heskey outlined the tactical puzzle facing the interim boss: "The centre-forward position is a difficult one for Manchester United at the moment. I rate Benjamin Sesko and would like to see him start because he's a more traditional striker, but then the difficulty is how best to fit in Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo into the first team as well."

His verdict? Start Cunha. "If I were Michael Carrick, I'd start Cunha up front over the other options. I feel he gives the attack a bit more mobility and he's started so strongly at the club. He'd be my pick out of the selection of forwards United have at their disposal."

Carrick has overseen a marked improvement since taking charge last month, steering United to four victories and a draw from his opening five matches. This upturn has already sparked suggestions the former midfielder should be considered for the permanent role beyond summer—quite the turnaround from Ruben Amorim's chaotic tenure.

The club's summer recruitment drive saw five new arrivals arrive at Old Trafford, with Sesko and Cunha among the £200m-plus investment in fresh talent. Sesko, however, endured a sluggish start to life at United following his move from RB Leipzig, though his recent purple patch has provided some encouragement.

Heskey also reflected on the unique pressures facing United's players. Speaking to OLBG, he drew parallels with his own career transition: "When you're playing in that environment, the pressure of Manchester United is not easy. There's a certain expectation. I remember moving from Leicester to Liverpool and it was totally different. There's a must win mentality. You're not thinking if we win. No. There's a must. There's a must win for trophies too. There's a must win going into every game."

While Heskey rates Sesko's technical quality, he suggests the Slovenian has found the adjustment demanding. "He's found it difficult as well, to be honest with you, but I quite like him. He's scored a couple of goals lately," Heskey noted—though his preference remains clear.
