Carrick Puts Centre-Back Recruitment on Ice as He Eyes Permanent Role

Michael Carrick has drawn a line through centre-back signings for the upcoming transfer window, dismissing speculation that Man Utd need to bolster their defensive ranks.

The interim boss has been holding recruitment discussions ahead of the summer campaign, with reports linking the club to midfielders, a left-back and a left-winger. Centre-backs have featured prominently in the rumour mill, but Carrick is having none of it.

"It's not an area of concern for me at this moment in time," he told reporters, with Harry Maguire's recent contract extension appearing to have settled matters at the back.

Carrick's stock has risen considerably following a stellar run that has seen him rack up eight victories, two draws and two defeats since taking temporary charge. Champions League qualification is now firmly within reach, and the 45-year-old finds himself in pole position for the permanent gig.

The former midfielder has also been part of planning sessions with the hierarchy, mapping out recruitment strategy for next season. He recently sat down with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Carrington for a more informal chat.

"I met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Carrington. We had a chat, a cup of tea. It was nice to see him showing his support," Carrick explained. "As a football club we're hugely connected, it's a big part. I'm really conscious that's how it should be."

There had been chatter suggesting Carrick lacked the "alpha" qualities Ratcliffe typically demands from his managers, but the pair's recent tête-à-tête appears to have smoothed any potential friction.

When pressed on whether the top job might become his permanently, Carrick remained philosophical. He reiterated his contentment with the current setup whilst stopping short of making any grand declarations about his long-term prospects.

"I enjoy being here, I love being here. It's a real privilege to be in the position I am but thriving with the responsibility that we've got," he said. "We've had some good results and we're in decent shape. We still want to keep improving, there's layers that we want to get to, really."

On the timeline for clarity regarding his future, Carrick adopted a characteristically measured approach. "I'm not sure, to be honest. Genuinely it's not something in terms of deadlines that I'm really chasing. I think it'll become clear when it's going to become clear."

The focus remains on the here and now, with Brentford awaiting in the Premier League on Monday evening as Utd chase another result to cement their European football credentials for next season. Carrick's immediate priority is straightforward: keep winning and let matters elsewhere take care of themselves.
