Carrick Dismisses Keane's "Big Mouth Wife" Jab Ahead of City Showdown

Michael Carrick has batted away Roy Keane's latest barb with characteristic cool, refusing to let the club legend's remarks about his wife Lisa ruffle his feathers ahead of his inaugural fixture in the Manchester United hot seat.

The United manager faces Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon in what represents a baptism of fire for his tenure. With every pundit and their uncle weighing in on his prospects, Keane couldn't resist taking a swipe at Lisa during a recent exchange with Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright.

The spark for Keane's jab traces back to 2014, when he took issue with Carrick's post-match demeanour following a United game, describing his interview as "as flat as the performance." Lisa responded sharply on social media at the time, before later deleting the tweet and explaining her emotions had gotten the better of her.

When Carragher suggested United shouldn't be employing Carrick—though hoping he'd do alright—Keane seized the moment. "Well, his wife can always come in because she's got a bit of a big mouth sometimes," he quipped. Wright and Carragher erupted in laughter, with Keane pressing his advantage: "She's probably doing the team talk."

Speaking at Friday's press conference, Carrick made clear the whole affair had washed over him. "It didn't bother me," he said bluntly.

The United boss took a broader view of the noise surrounding his appointment, explaining that external commentary—whether complimentary or otherwise—simply doesn't factor into his thinking. "They're not putting more pressure on me. I don't feel that," he continued. "There are plenty of opinions around, some positive, some not too much. It's totally irrelevant in terms of what I focus on."

He remained steadfast in his conviction that attention should remain on the work ahead. "I know what we want to improve on, how we want to work with the players. There's a lot that can be said, it's the way of the world. I'm not going to pay too much attention to that. For me, the players and staff it's a focus on how we're going to succeed."

With City awaiting on Saturday, Carrick appears determined to let his team's performance do the talking.
