Carrick Pushes for Tonali as Man Utd Accelerate Midfield Overhaul

Michael Carrick has made his midfield priorities crystal clear, with reports from Spain claiming the newly-appointed permanent head coach has "demanded" that Sandro Tonali becomes Manchester United's next acquisition this summer.

The Newcastle midfielder sits at the top of Carrick's wish list as the Red Devils plot a comprehensive overhaul of their engine room. Negotiations are said to be progressing at pace, though Newcastle's asking price remains steep—the Magpies are holding out for at least €90m.

Fabrizio Romano provided additional context on the Ederson situation, explaining that the midfielder has informed Atalanta he will not be renewing his current deal, which expires in summer 2027. This development essentially guarantees his departure from Bergamo this window and positions him as one of the more straightforward options on United's list—particularly given his enthusiasm for a move to Manchester and the reduced financial barriers presented by his expiring contract.

However, Romano stressed that Ederson remains just one name among several under consideration. United have cast a wider net in their midfield search, meaning Tonali's signing would not preclude further additions in that area.

The Champions League qualification secured by Carrick's impressive second-half turnaround—steering United to third place in the Premier League—has substantially boosted the transfer budget.
