Butt Tempers Tchouameni Hopes: Real Madrid Won't Let Star Leave Lightly

Manchester United's summer shopping list is taking shape, but Nicky Butt reckons one particular target might prove too ambitious for the Red Devils.

After splashing over £200m on reinforcements last year—largely addressing a toothless attack that ranked amongst the Premier League's worst offenders—United have now turned their sights to midfield. With Casemiro exiting on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte earmarked for the exit, the club are preparing to bring in at least two new operators in the middle of the park.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali have all been mentioned in dispatches. Yet the most eye-catching whisper has involved Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, with suggestions the Spanish outfit might be willing to move him on.

Don't hold your breath, though. Speaking to Paddy Power, Butt—who watched Tchouameni flourish at Monaco before his Bernabéu switch—insisted prying him away from Real Madrid represents "a long shot."

"I think he's a phenomenal footballer and exactly what United need in that sitting area," Butt explained. "But I don't see Real Madrid selling Tchouameni until they get somebody who can replace him—maybe Rodri if Pep leaves Man City—or if Florentino Perez wants to tear it all down because they're not winning."

The £70m-valued midfielder ticks every box: international pedigree, Champions League experience, physical dominance, technical quality. He's entering his prime years with the lot—pace, power, aggression, and a footballer's brain to match. "He's a beast of a player," Butt declared.

When pressed on whether Tchouameni represents a superior prospect to Anderson or Wharton, Butt advocated for going after both. "In years gone by Man United would have gone for both," he said, though he acknowledged the practicalities might not align.

The former midfielder made a telling point about experience: whilst Premier League familiarity matters for younger prospects like Rasmus Hojlund or Benjamin Sesko, Tchouameni has spent years operating at Europe's highest level. "He's a fantastic player," Butt insisted, "so with that one I think you just go, 'he's capable'."

Yet the cold reality remains. Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on any Real Madrid exit, insisting there's precious little indication the club will entertain offers for their prized midfielder. Though Tchouameni is "certainly appreciated" at Old Trafford, Real Madrid are sending no signals they're prepared to open the door.

Romano confirmed United's summer blueprint: two midfielders, preferably marquee names rather than bargain-bin options. Anderson and Tonali feature prominently on their radar. Manchester City, meanwhile, are also circling Anderson, promising a competitive summer in the transfer market.

For now, Tchouameni remains a pipedream. Real Madrid aren't budging, and United will need to look elsewhere to refresh their engine room.
