Manchester United have shelved immediate contract negotiations with Bruno Fernandes, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe choosing to redirect resources toward bolstering the squad with fresh talent instead.

The Portuguese midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable season at Old Trafford, orchestrating United's return to Champions League football while racking up an impressive 21 assists—a Premier League record that earned him a clean sweep of the division's individual accolades. Yet despite his stellar form and undisputed importance to the club's midfield, fresh talks over extending his deal have been postponed.

Fernandes had been the subject of persistent exit speculation over the past 12 months, with a move to the Saudi Pro League appearing close last summer. The 31-year-old subsequently indicated that United's hierarchy had been open to his departure to generate funds for new signings. However, following his adaptation to interim boss Michael Carrick's methods and his emergence as a vocal supporter of the manager behind the scenes, the club's stance has shifted dramatically. Sources indicate Fernandes has been among the senior figures actively championing Carrick's case to the club's leadership, believing he represents the right permanent choice for the job.

With Carrick's position now secured on a permanent basis and Champions League qualification confirmed, Fernandes has signalled his commitment to remaining at United. The club hierarchy have adopted a relaxed approach, content in the assurance that their midfield lynchpin intends to stay put for the foreseeable future.

However, negotiations over fresh terms will now wait until after the World Cup, contrary to earlier reports suggesting they wanted the matter resolved beforehand. Contract talks are expected to commence before the end of 2026, though Ratcliffe's immediate focus lies elsewhere. The United supremo has instead prioritised strengthening the squad, shelving Fernandes' future on the agenda for now.

The 32-year-old remains under contract until next summer with a 12-month extension option built in. His £55m release clause appears academic given his £300,000 weekly wage, with United confident no interested party would meet the asking price.

Meanwhile, the club have already wrapped up a £35m transfer for Atalanta midfielder Ederson and have cast their net toward Newcastle's Lewis Hall as a potential left-back addition.
