Carrick's Stability Could Be Crucial to Keeping Fernandes, Says Romano

Fabrizio Romano has highlighted how Manchester United's hierarchy view Michael Carrick as a linchpin in their efforts to retain Bruno Fernandes, with Saudi Arabia's persistent interest continuing to pose a retention challenge.

The Portuguese playmaker has faced sustained uncertainty regarding his future over recent seasons, with the Saudi Pro League repeatedly making approaches. Al-Hilal's offer last summer was particularly eye-watering—£100m transfer fee coupled with wages hitting £700k weekly—yet Fernandes ultimately chose to remain at Old Trafford.

The midfielder did not hide his frustration at one point, publicly expressing hurt that the club had considered selling him during the previous summer's rebuild plans. That stance has shifted dramatically, however, as Fernandes has once again delivered the kind of performances that define his United tenure: eight goals and 19 assists across 31 Premier League outings.

Carrick's appointment following Ruben Amorim's departure has transformed expectations. The interim boss has guided the Red Devils to third place—a position few anticipated possible given the turbulent backdrop—and the board now recognises that making his role permanent could prove decisive in keeping Fernandes focused on Champions League football at Old Trafford rather than chasing Saudi riches.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained the significance: "Bruno mentioned in a BBC interview that when Carrick arrived, nobody expected United to reach third place at this stage of the season. The assumption was a difficult run-in, but Carrick has delivered stability. His tactical approach has been spot-on, his handling of the dressing room leaders is excellent, and with Bruno specifically, he's built a strong relationship."

The transfer analyst continued: "Saudi clubs remain keen—they always have been—but United believe Carrick could prove an important factor in keeping Bruno for next season's Champions League campaign. The relationships he's forged with key players are clearly excellent. Look at how Harry Maguire and others speak about him. That's genuinely significant."

Fernandes himself has provided insight into his thinking when discussing why he rejected the Saudi windfall. The midfielder credited his wife's grounded perspective and pointed questioning as instrumental in his decision-making process.

"I stayed because I felt I could still give something meaningful to the club," Fernandes explained. "Yes, the Saudi offer was enormous—all that money. It was genuinely huge. But my wife keeps her feet planted firmly, just as I do. We're not motivated by becoming the wealthiest people imaginable.

"She asked me two things: 'Have you achieved your dreams? Have you accomplished everything you set out to do?' That simple observation made me understand we were thinking identically. I wasn't prepared to walk away from Manchester United while things were difficult."
