Real Madrid Circle Luis Enrique as United Chase Manager Target

Manchester United face competition from Real Madrid in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique, with the Spanish giants preparing an ambitious approach for the decorated coach ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have been actively scouting Enrique as a potential successor to Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January. Michael Carrick has stepped into the breach on an interim basis, and the former midfielder has made quite the impression, racking up seven wins, two draws and a single defeat from his opening ten matches.

Carrick's strong showing has positioned him as the frontrunner for the permanent post, though United's hierarchy remains open to alternatives. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have both been instrumental in identifying Enrique as a top candidate for the Old Trafford role, per reports. However, Ineos ownership is understood to favour a continuance with Carrick, at least initially, should the club secure Champions League football.

Enrique's profile has certainly caught the attention of United's recruitment team. The PSG boss is increasingly being mentioned in discussions at the club, with insiders suggesting United would be willing to make a serious play for him. There is growing speculation that the Spaniard could depart Paris this summer, and he has long harboured ambitions of managing in the Premier League.

Yet Real Madrid are moving decisively. According to reports, club president Florentino Perez is already orchestrating an ambitious swoop to bring Enrique to the Bernabéu as successor to Alvaro Arbeloa. Despite his historical ties to Barcelona, Real Madrid have identified him as a prime target for their managerial vacancy.

Should Enrique opt to leave PSG, the Parisian club have already lined up Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement.

Meanwhile, Carrick continues to strengthen his position through his work on the pitch. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey recently suggested that the interim manager's performances, attitude and commitment are what will ultimately secure him the job. "This is Manchester United, it is a pressure cooker of a club – it always will be," Bailey noted. "There will always be comments both negative and positive. But I am told that will not sway the club in any way."

United's hierarchy insists they are conducting thorough due diligence on all available options, though Carrick is increasingly emerging as the leading candidate.
