Van Persie in the Frame for Old Trafford Hot Seat, Says Gullit

Ruud Gullit has thrown his weight behind Robin van Persie as a potential future manager of Manchester United, suggesting the former Gunners striker possesses the qualities needed for the Old Trafford job.

Van Persie, who netted 132 goals across 278 appearances during his spell at Arsenal before winning the Premier League title in his debut season at United, currently manages Feyenoord. Gullit believes the Dutch coach has evolved into a "great manager" since hanging up his boots, though he acknowledges the former international is experiencing a testing period in Rotterdam.

"It would be great if Robin van Persie became the manager of Manchester United in the future. I definitely hope that happens at some point!" Gullit told Gambling Insider. "Robin is a great manager, but he's struggling a little bit at Feyenoord at the moment. I feel like the expectations for him are very high because of the career he had, so he's under the spotlight a lot more than other managers in the Eredivisie."

The ex-Chelsea boss drew parallels with Sir Alex Ferguson's early struggles, suggesting patience could prove worthwhile. "He's under fire over here in Holland at the moment, but I hope he's given time to rectify it and prove how good he is. Look what happened with Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United – they kept him, and look how good he ended up being! Down the line however, I think it would be great for Robin to manage at Old Trafford one day."

The managerial speculation continues at United despite Michael Carrick's impressive start as interim head coach. The former midfielder has won all four of his opening matches, lifting the club to fourth place and keeping Champions League qualification within reach. However, his long-term future remains unresolved.

Gary Neville has shed light on the club's approach to the permanent appointment. Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the United legend revealed the club has already begun scouting potential candidates and gathering data on prospective managers, but will resist any pressure to rush into a decision.

"They've started the process of speaking to and looking at other managers, building all the sorts of data and analysing who should be the next manager of the football club," Neville explained. "But what they've said is they're not going to be bounced into – irrespective of wins or draws or losses on the pitch in this next couple of months – making an appointment. They're going to wait until towards the end of the season."
