Man City Steal a March on United and Arsenal in Bouaddi Stakes

Manchester City have positioned themselves as frontrunners in the battle to land Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, pulling clear of fellow Premier League heavyweights Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea in the process.

The Moroccan midfielder has caught the eye at the World Cup, prompting interest from several of Europe's elite. Real Madrid have reportedly been monitoring his progress for some time, while Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and various Italian outfits are all keeping tabs on a potential swoop.

City have now held preliminary discussions with Bouaddi's camp, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who noted that PSG have not made significant headway given their competing priorities. Romano indicated that the Citizens are considering a strategy whereby Bouaddi would remain at Lille through the 2027-28 campaign before joining City.

The deciding factor in City's favour appears to be their openness to negotiating a deal structured for summer 2027 rather than an immediate transfer. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on talkSPORT that this flexibility has given Pep Guardiola's side the edge over their rivals.

"Bouaddi is someone they're examining very closely," Jacobs explained. "United like him, Chelsea and Arsenal have him on their list, and Bayern Munich too. But here's where it gets interesting – Lille are keen to sell, though they'd much prefer a 2027 deal. City have shown they're prepared to discuss that scenario with a loan arrangement or pre-agreement in place, allowing Bouaddi another season at Lille."

The financial picture varies depending on the structure. A deal completed next summer would command a £100 million fee, though that figure could drop to £80 million if a club agrees to a loan-back arrangement or pre-contract agreement with Lille.

Meanwhile, United, City and Arsenal are all casting their nets wider in midfield. Bournemouth's Alex Scott has emerged as a target for all three clubs, with the south coast outfit valuing him at approximately £80 million. Bournemouth are pushing Scott to commit to a new contract that would include a release clause.

United have missed out on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, with Tottenham prepared to meet the £85 million asking price that the Red Devils deemed too steep. The midfielder never indicated a preference between the two suitors, leaving both to pursue negotiations independently.

Beyond Scott, United are also eyeing Aurélien Tchouaméni and Carlos Baleba as alternative midfield options. Sandro Tonali, a target for both Spurs and City, remains under consideration at Old Trafford, though the cost of any deal would need to come down significantly. Sander Berge is another name in the conversation.

This midfield arms race promises to be one of the summer's most compelling storylines, with several clubs jostling for position and Lille holding the upper hand in negotiations.
