United and Arsenal circle as Newcastle slap £80m-£100m tag on Tonali

The summer transfer circus is already warming up, and Sandro Tonali finds himself front and centre of the speculation. Manchester United have placed the Newcastle midfielder firmly on their shortlist as they prepare for a midfield overhaul at Old Trafford, according to reports doing the rounds.

The Italian's name has been doing the rounds since transfer deadline day, when Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg sparked intrigue by suggesting Arsenal harboured interest in a winter move. That notion was swiftly extinguished by the usual reliable voices, but it's opened the floodgates for summer chatter about the 24-year-old's next chapter.

Since then, the speculation has only intensified. United have identified Tonali as a long-term option following three seasons in the Premier League, with the Daily Telegraph reporting he sits high on their radar as they reshape their engine room. Yet there's a complication – Tonali is reportedly open to engineering a return to Italy come summer, which could prove a stumbling block for his English suitors.

Man City and Arsenal are also keeping tabs on proceedings, with Juventus sniffing around as well. Sources indicate the former AC Milan man would be receptive to a Serie A homecoming, putting his admirers on alert.

Newcastle, naturally, aren't about to wave goodbye on the cheap. The Magpies have valued Tonali somewhere between £80m and £100m – they're intent on recouping their investment and then some for the midfielder who arrived in 2023.

Tonali's agent, Giuseppe Riso, offered a measured assessment when speaking to Tuttosport last week. "Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League," he said. "These transfer discussions will take place later. We'll see how the season ends and then we'll decide what to do. There's no preference at the moment. It's still early. What we're saying today won't apply tomorrow."

He continued: "Newcastle couldn't let him go now, and there's no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club. We'll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer."

Alan Shearer, the Newcastle legend, reckons a departure could well be on the cards if the Magpies stumble in their European ambitions. Speaking to Betfair, Shearer acknowledged that while Tonali hasn't quite replicated last season's form, the calculus changes dramatically if Newcastle fail to secure Champions League football.

"If Newcastle aren't going to qualify for Europe or be competitive in the Premier League, you'd expect other clubs will look at Newcastle and try to buy their best players," Shearer explained. "Although it was a surprise in the January window, I think it'll happen more in the summer if Newcastle don't achieve what they have in the past few years."

He added: "Top players want to play Champions League football, and we know there's no real loyalty in football. Newcastle have to start winning games and go far in the FA Cup and hopefully the Champions League to try and rescue what, at the minute, certainly Premier League wise, has been a disappointing return."

The message is clear: Tonali stays put if Newcastle are competing at the top. If they're not, the vultures will circle.
