Amorim Takes Sacking in Stride as Man Utd Move to Replace Him

Ruben Amorim's departure from Manchester United has come as no great shock to the man himself, with the Portuguese coach having anticipated the axe would fall after falling out with the club's hierarchy over transfer strategy and tactical direction.

The Red Devils confirmed on Monday morning that they had parted ways with Amorim, whose tenure ended following an uninspiring 1-1 stalemate against Leeds on Sunday. Darren Fletcher will assume temporary responsibility for their upcoming fixture against Burnley.

Amorim had publicly vented his frustrations immediately after the Leeds result, directing criticism at both the board and his detractors before learning of his dismissal less than a day later. Behind-the-scenes tensions had reportedly been simmering prior to the Yorkshire clash, with director of football Jason Wilcox at odds with the manager over both formation choices and recruitment priorities.

According to Sky Sports, Amorim had seen the writing on the wall. The 39-year-old remains optimistic that United could still reach the Champions League places and harboured hopes that returning AFCON absentees would spark an upturn in form. Nevertheless, he made his position abundantly clear: the club required one or two experienced additions during the winter market.

"He always gave his honest opinion and made it clear that he felt United needed one or two experienced signings this window," Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol reported. "He feels United don't just have one manager inside the club, they have many managers outside as well. It's important to block out the noise."

Amorim's frustration extended to recruitment philosophy. He had reportedly favoured bringing in Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins ahead of summer arrival Benjamin Sesko, and sources suggest he pushed for an established Premier League striker during January. Jean-Philippe Mateta has been identified as a player of long-standing interest to the club.

The former Sporting CP boss is understood to feel he lacked sufficient backing from the club's decision-makers and is expected to return to Portugal within days to regroup. Despite the circumstances, Amorim has indicated he intends to stick to his principles and pursue fresh opportunities in due course.
