United Chasing Branthwaite and Lewis-Skelly as Summer Overhaul Looms

Manchester United are preparing for an ambitious transfer campaign this summer, with defensive reinforcements firmly on the agenda alongside their primary focus of midfield overhaul. Two names have emerged as targets: Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Reports suggest the Old Trafford hierarchy are in "advanced talks" regarding Branthwaite, whilst intermediaries have offered Lewis-Skelly to the club. The Arsenal youngster is understood to be seeking a move away from the Emirates to secure regular first-team football, having fallen behind Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie in the left-back pecking order.

Insiders at United are reportedly convinced of Lewis-Skelly's eagerness to make the switch, though the 20-year-old appears the more realistic proposition of the two targets. The Branthwaite situation carries considerably more complexity. TEAMtalk have poured cold water on claims of substantive negotiations, dismissing the "advanced talks" narrative as wide of the mark.

Pricing represents another significant hurdle. Branthwaite's valuation sits around the £70m mark following his contract extension through 2030 agreed at the start of this season, placing him well outside United's likely defensive budget given their midfield priorities. This constraint may force the club toward more economical alternatives at centre-back.

That's where Roma's Evan Ndicka enters the conversation. Football analyst Andy Brassell has advocated strongly for the Italian capital's defensive asset, suggesting United would be foolish to overlook him. Speaking to talkSPORT, Brassell outlined his reasoning: "If I was a Premier League club, I would be all over Roma for Evan Ndicka. I think he's already a great defender and I think he'll get even better."

Brassell emphasised the importance of capitalising on United's recent positive trajectory under Michael Carrick. "They can't allow what's happened over the last couple of months and the positive uptick, in the context of, what I have to say quality-wise is quite an average Premier League this season to take their foot off the gas," he explained. "They've got to really grasp that opportunity and they can't be fooled into thinking that everything's fine."

The analyst believes Champions League qualification, should United secure it, presents the perfect moment to strengthen. "They have to go out and make some good signings. And in terms of refreshing that defence, I think Ndicka would be absolutely perfect," Brassell concluded.

The summer window promises to be transformative at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting seven players will follow Casemiro out the door, freeing up considerable resources for the incoming business.
