United Ready to Cash In on Maguire Despite Champions League Role, Says Scout

Manchester United stand ready to entertain offers for England defender Harry Maguire come the summer transfer window, according to reports emerging from Football Insider. The move would represent a striking about-turn given the 33-year-old's resurgence in the second half of the 2025/26 season.

Maguire's path at Old Trafford has been far from straightforward, yet he emerged as one of the club's standout performers under Michael Carrick's stewardship. His performances proved instrumental in securing Champions League qualification for next term, a contribution rewarded with a fresh one-year extension through 2027.

Nevertheless, the centre-back has found himself the subject of persistent exit speculation in recent months, with reports suggesting he has been dangled in front of European suitors. Should a sufficiently lucrative package arrive on the desk, the club's hierarchy are believed prepared to sanction his departure—a move rooted in financial pragmatism rather than footballing logic.

Former United chief scout Mick Brown has been scathing about the prospect. Speaking to Football Insider, he branded such a decision "ridiculous," pointing to Maguire's tangible impact on the pitch and his value as a seasoned presence in the dressing room.

"You can see the difference on the pitch when Maguire is in the side compared to when he's not," Brown explained. "He has a clear impact on the team. Plus, he's an experienced head which helps with the development of people like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven who are just coming through."

The crux of the matter, Brown suggested, lies with the club's financial priorities. "The problem is, a lot of the time the club and the owners just see pound signs," he said. "If the right offer comes in for Maguire, they can let him go to raise a bit of money, and then use that money to sign some new players."

United are chasing squad reinforcements across multiple positions, particularly in midfield, where they've already wrapped up a deal for Ederson Silva. They're also eyeing West Ham's Matheus Fernandes, though the Hammers' asking price of around £80m is likely to prove prohibitive.

Brown believes Fernandes will ultimately leave on far more modest terms. "It's going to be hard for West Ham to keep Fernandes," he noted, highlighting the difficulties faced by relegated clubs attempting to retain their best talent. "As the window goes on and it becomes clear he wants to move on, that price tag is going to drop, and a club like Man United could look to take advantage of that."

The midfielder, who impressed during West Ham's Premier League tenure, has little incentive to remain in the Championship, making a cut-price summer exit increasingly probable.
