Mason Mount Exit Looms as Manchester United Open Door to Summer Departure

Manchester United are signalling their willingness to entertain bids for Mason Mount when the transfer window reopens, casting doubt over the midfielder's long-term future at Old Trafford.

Mount arrived as one of three marquee recruits in summer 2023, following Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana through the door. The England international's move from Chelsea came with a £55million initial fee plus £5million in performance-related add-ons, a considerable investment for a player entering the final twelve months of his Stamford Bridge contract.

Since his arrival, however, injuries have proven a recurring nightmare. Last season he managed just 17 Premier League outings, and this campaign tells a similarly frustrating tale—the same tally of appearances with three goals to show for his efforts. At 27, the midfielder has yet to make a league start in 2026.

There was a glimmer of hope under Ruben Amorim's stewardship, with Mount finally stringing together consistent minutes. That progress has stalled dramatically under Michael Carrick's interim regime, however, with fitness issues continuing to derail any momentum.

Former United chief scout Mick Brown believes the club's hierarchy have already reached their verdict. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown suggested that United are prepared to move Mount on if the right offer materialises, despite widespread respect for the player within the organisation.

"Everybody speaks very highly of him," Brown explained, "but his injury record doesn't stand up. It's been a problem since day one and he never quite seems to shake it off. He comes back for a couple of matches, then he's sidelined again."

Brown further questioned Mount's impact when available. "He hasn't exactly set the world alight when he has played," the former scout added, "and he's hardly featured under Carrick because of those injuries. They're prepared to move him on, which might free up resources to bring someone else in."

The midfielder's injury woes have prevented any meaningful assessment of how he might flourish in Carrick's tactical setup. Yet there remains a silver lining to Mount's United story—when fully fit, he has demonstrated genuine quality. His contributions were instrumental in last season's Europa League final run, and he showcased impressive tactical flexibility under Amorim's management.

A summer exit would still raise eyebrows given Mount's previous importance to the club's ambitions. Nevertheless, the writing appears increasingly legible on the wall.
