Man Utd Submit £34m Bid for Borussia Mönchengladbach Star as Tonali Emerges as Midfield Target

Manchester United have made their move in the transfer market, submitting a formal offer worth £34m for Borussia Mönchengladbach's Rocco Reitz as they hunt for midfield cover following Casemiro's impending exit.

The Red Devils remained quiet during the January window but invested heavily last summer, bringing in Senne Lammens, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha—all of whom have contributed meaningfully to their campaign. Yet the midfield ranks still require reinforcement once the Brazilian departs when his contract expires in the summer.

Under interim boss Michael Carrick, United's fortunes have transformed markedly. The midfield partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro has clicked into gear, with performances and results improving dramatically at Old Trafford. Casemiro himself has enjoyed a fine swansong, though his imminent departure necessitates planning ahead.

Several names have circulated as potential replacements, including Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson. Now, United are accelerating their pursuit of Reitz, the Mönchengladbach sensation who has caught their eye. Their financial muscle appears to be proving decisive—both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have registered interest in the German defensive midfielder, but neither has shown willingness to meet the figures United are proposing.

"Interest in Rocco Reitz isn't limited to England," one source noted. "Both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have inquired about his availability, aware of the German midfielder's potential. However, neither club seems willing, for now, to match the figures Manchester United is talking about."

Away from Germany, United have also zeroed in on Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, who sits high on their shortlist of midfield targets. The Magpies value their talismanic midfielder at £100m, though his agent has left the door ajar regarding a potential summer move.

"Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League," Tonali's representative Giuseppe Riso told Italian outlet Tuttosport. "We'll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer. These transfer discussions will take place later. We'll see how the season ends and then we'll decide what to do.

"There's no preference. It's still early. What we're saying today won't apply tomorrow. Newcastle couldn't let him go now, and there's no point moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club."

Tonali's comments suggest any move would likely materialise only once the campaign concludes, with Newcastle's Champions League aspirations a significant factor in his thinking. For now, United have multiple irons in the fire—Baleba, Anderson, Wharton and Reitz all representing viable options as Carrick's side prepare for life without Casemiro.
