Boehly's Candid Admission: 'If City Wanted Him, We Had to Have Him'

Todd Boehly has lifted the lid on Chelsea's rather unconventional transfer recruitment strategy during his maiden summer in charge, admitting the club's pursuit of Marc Cucurella boiled down to one straightforward principle: if Manchester City fancied him, so did Chelsea.

The Blues have splashed a staggering £1.5billion assembling a squad of 37 first-team players since Boehly's consortium took over in 2022. Results on the pitch have been decidedly mixed, though the £62million Cucurella has quietly developed into a genuine asset despite a rocky introduction.

When Cucurella first arrived at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea supporters gave him a thoroughly rough reception. Former manager Graham Potter, speaking in November 2024, acknowledged the "real dislike" that permeated through the stands, noting the left-back endured "quite hostile" treatment at times. Potter credited Cucurella's character for persevering through the ordeal, and highlighted a standout Champions League display against Borussia Dortmund as a turning point in how supporters viewed him.

"He's got the character," Potter said. "You're not going to get a person in terms of how he is with his teammates, how good he is around the club, around the place, and how he fights every single day."

Cucurella formed part of a nine-strong intake during that chaotic 2022 summer window, when Boehly found himself juggling interim sporting director duties following the departure of the previous management structure. The early transfer windows under new ownership became something of a running joke—whispers that Chelsea were simply hoovering up any player their rivals showed interest in.

Boehly has now confirmed there was more than a kernel of truth to it. Speaking to iConnections, he explained: "Having taken over in the circumstances that we did, basically the whole management team left. I was stuck being interim Sporting Director for a summer, having no idea what made a good football player. But knowing that Marc Cucurella, if Man City wanted him, I want him. It was really simple that way."

Fair play to the man for his honesty. And to be frank, there are considerably worse clubs to use as a scouting template.

Chelsea's attention now turns to Sunday's Premier League showdown with Arsenal. Victory would propel the Blues back above Liverpool and into the Champions League qualification spots.
