City's Surprise Buy-Back Twist Could Scupper Rogers' Summer Suitors

Manchester City are mulling the activation of a mysterious buy-back clause on Morgan Rogers, according to reports, as they look to put the brakes on rival clubs' pursuit of the Aston Villa sensation this summer.

Rogers arrived at City's academy from West Brom in 2019, embarking on a familiar pathway of loan moves through Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool before securing a permanent switch to Middlesbrough for roughly £1m in 2023. Villa subsequently snapped him up for £8m following an impressive Championship campaign, and the 23-year-old has since blossomed into one of the Premier League's brightest prospects. His contributions have been instrumental in Villa's Champions League qualification and Europa League triumph this season, earning him a spot in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup.

The winger's 36 Premier League goal contributions over the past two seasons have naturally attracted the attention of the division's heavyweight clubs. Transfer analyst Ben Jacobs outlined the landscape at the end of last month, noting that Arsenal have positioned themselves as serious contenders alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and PSG. Villa's valuation sits at £80m-plus, with a departure anticipated this summer as all parties appear amenable to a deal. Rogers himself remains unflustered about his situation, though Villa would consider selling before the World Cup should an adequate offer materialise.

Jacobs subsequently appeared on The United Stand to elaborate on United's involvement, confirming that Rogers features among their shortlist of left-wing targets. "United are looking for a left winger and Morgan Rogers is one of the candidates," he explained, highlighting that Michael Carrick worked with him briefly at Middlesbrough, while Jason Wilcox played a role in his development during his City days.

Yet here's where things get properly intriguing. Jacobs then dropped a bombshell: City possess a buy-back option on Rogers despite having never sold him directly to Villa. "Man City have got a buyback clause there; they have held a conversation about potentially triggering that but nothing is advancing yet," he revealed.

Buy-back clauses typically accompany direct transfers, but City could theoretically have inserted the clause into Rogers' Middlesbrough move with the stipulation that it carried forward to any subsequent buyer—Villa included. Unusual? Absolutely. Possible? Apparently so.

Regarding the broader competition for his signature, Jacobs maintained that Arsenal remain the primary challengers to United's advances, with Chelsea and PSG also lurking. Despite Villa's occasional noises about standing firm, his assessment suggests the Villans will sanction an exit at the right price, even with Champions League football on the horizon.
