Manchester City have secured Josko Gvardiol's long-term future, with the Croatian centre-back putting pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at the Etihad until 2031.

The deal represents a significant statement of intent from the club following a period of considerable change in the dugout and dressing room. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on Monday, noting that City's hopes of keeping their "key player" have been realised despite Real Madrid and Barcelona's advances.

Gvardiol arrived at City from RB Leipzig for approximately £77m back in 2023, establishing himself as one of the world's finest young defensive talents. The 24-year-old has proven his versatility under previous management, operating effectively at both centre-back and left-back, though a frustrating injury-plagued campaign saw him limited to just 18 Premier League outings this season.

The timing of the renewal is particularly noteworthy given the departures of Pep Guardiola, John Stones, and Bernardo Silva. Director Viana and incoming manager Enzo Maresca have clearly identified the defender as central to their rebuild.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg corroborated the news, confirming the new terms extend through 2031 with final administrative details still to be formalised.

Fernandez Saga Points Toward Madrid

Attention now turns to incomings, with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez having emerged as a target to reunite with Maresca. However, the pursuit appears to be heading for the exit door.

Well-placed sources indicate Fernandez is intent on joining Real Madrid, with Manchester City and Paris St-Germain both having withdrawn from the running. The Spanish giants now appear to be the overwhelming favourite for the Argentine's signature.

Fernandez, who contributed 15 goals and seven assists for Chelsea last season, remains contracted to the Blues until 2032. New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso would reportedly be satisfied with retaining the midfielder, though the player's preference seems to lie elsewhere.
