Rodri Won't Rule Out Madrid Move, But World Cup Comes First

Manchester City's midfield maestro Rodri has neither shut the door on a potential Real Madrid switch nor committed his immediate future to the Etihad, instead choosing to keep his cards close to his chest whilst the World Cup looms large.
The Spanish playmaker, who claimed last year's Ballon d'Or, is entering the final 12 months of his City contract and has naturally attracted speculation linking him with the European champions. Yet when pressed on the matter this week, the 29-year-old proved diplomatically evasive.
"When you're winding down a contract, these things happen – it's just part and parcel of the game," Rodri explained to assembled media. "I'm not losing sleep over it, mind you. I know precisely where I stand."
He went on to suggest that absent the World Cup, his situation might look rather different by now. Instead, he's determined to compartmentalise, keeping his head clear for Spain's group-stage fixtures against Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay across the June-to-July tournament in North America.
"Everything else gets shelved until this is done," he stated. "That's where my responsibility lies right now."
Beyond contract wrangling, Rodri has been channelling his inner tennis philosopher. Having recently watched a documentary on Rafa Nadal's career, he's encouraged his Spain teammates to adopt the 22-times Grand Slam champion's relentless mentality – the notion of fighting for every ball, never assuming superiority, and maximising the considerable talent at La Roja's disposal.
"That's what separates the truly great from the rest," Rodri reflected. "The willingness to graft for one more effort, one more point. Our squad has enormous quality; it's about unlocking it with that same hunger."
