Arsenal handed Champions League gift as City drawn against Madrid

The Champions League's last-16 draw has painted a starkly different picture for England's six representatives, with Arsenal emerging as the clear beneficiaries while their Premier League rivals face a considerably tougher path to the semi-finals.

Manchester City's reward for topping their league phase group is a blockbuster showdown with Real Madrid—arguably the standout tie of the round. It's the sort of fixture that gets neutrals reaching for the fixture list, though City might have hoped for slightly gentler opposition at this stage.

The other half of the draw, however, reads like a who's who of European football's heavyweight division. Liverpool must face Galatasaray once more, having suffered a 1-0 defeat in Istanbul back in September. Chelsea find themselves in a rematch of last summer's Club World Cup final against PSG, while Bayern Munich have drawn Atalanta.

Arsenal, by contrast, appear to have landed on their feet. The Premier League leaders—who won every single league phase match—will tackle Bayer Leverkusen in their opener. Should they progress, either Bodo/Glimt or Sporting Lisbon await, a far cry from the continental juggernauts lurking on the opposite side of the draw.

The Gunners share their half with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, the latter facing Barcelona after the Spanish side's victory at St James' Park during the league phase. Spurs must overcome Atletico Madrid.

This particular draw configuration means Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle are all positioned to potentially meet in the latter stages without having to navigate the minefield that awaits City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

The fixtures themselves are scheduled for 10-11 March and 17-18 March, with the quarter-finals following on 7-8 April and 14-15 April. The semi-finals will take place across 28-29 April and 5-6 May.
