Guehi's Next Move: Man City Close In As Defender Spurns Madrid

Marc Guehi looks set to depart Crystal Palace this month, with Manchester City moving decisively to land the centre-back after reaching a 'verbal agreement' on personal terms.

The Palace skipper has become one of Europe's most coveted defenders, catching the eye consistently for both club and country. With his contract running down to summer, the door has swung wide open for a winter exit—and City appear ready to walk through it.

Liverpool came tantalisingly close to snapping up Guehi last August, agreeing a £35m deal with Palace only for the Eagles to cold feet on deadline day, unable to secure a replacement in time. That near-miss has now handed City their opportunity.

With Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol sidelined through injury, City have pivoted their attention to Guehi. Having already secured Antoine Semenyo for £64m, the champions are now ready to test Palace's resolve with an opening offer expected to fall in the region of £15m, potentially rising to £20m.

Palace, understandably keen to avoid losing their prize asset for nothing come summer, face a decision on whether to cash in now. City's proposal will likely force their hand.

What's more, Guehi has already made clear where his priorities lie. Despite Real Madrid's persistent interest and exploratory talks in recent weeks, the England international has rejected the Spanish giants' advances, preferring to remain in the Premier League where he feels his development will be best served.

"The centre-back believes his career development depends on continuing to compete in the Premier League, a league he knows well, where he is a key player, and where he feels his profile is a better fit for the medium and long term," a report explained.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner has already signalled his club's willingness to negotiate, though not without condition. "I think Marc will stay but if Marc says 'I want to leave', and a club pays massive money – with five months left of a contract – every player will leave if you're playing for a club like Crystal Palace," Glasner said.

"I'm pretty sure our chairman will ask for a very high price for him and then let's see. I don't know if Marc wants to leave. Right now, when I see him playing, when I see him training, when I see his commitment and when we are talking quite often together, then I think the fans can be really be calm but you never know what will happen in football."

The message is clear: Palace will listen, but only if the money is right. Whether City's bid meets that threshold remains to be seen.
