Erling Haaland has signalled his intention to stick with Manchester City for at least another 12 months before orchestrating his long-anticipated move to Barcelona, according to reports emanating from Spain.

The Norwegian striker's current campaign has proven rather lean by his own exacting standards. Since Boxing Day, he's managed just five goals across 20 outings—hardly the kind of return that's kept the Etihad trophy cabinet groaning under the weight of silverware.

Still, Haaland's overall contribution to City's cause remains staggering. The 25-year-old has plundered 154 goals in 189 appearances since his £51m arrival from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, with 107 of those coming in the Premier League alone. A bargain of the highest order, by any measure.

His long-standing desire to test himself across Europe's top leagues—Spain particularly—has always suggested a eventual departure might be inevitable. But rather than force a summer exit, Haaland has apparently made clear to the City hierarchy that he's staying put through the 2026-27 campaign. When that season concludes, his release clause will tumble to approximately €150 million, making a Barcelona switch far more palatable.

The timing suits all parties. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have earmarked Haaland as their marquee signing, yet the club's financial constraints make a move this summer virtually impossible. By 2027, they'll have had time to restore their balance sheet. Reports from Spain suggest Girona manager Michel stands on the verge of being anointed as Guardiola's chosen successor—a decision reportedly made by Pep himself to safeguard continuity. The Madrid-born tactician is described as the "chosen one" to take the reins, with City keen to secure his services ahead of rival suitors circling.

Vincent Kompany, currently overseeing a promising Bayern Munich project, has also attracted speculation. Yet Fabrizio Romano insists the picture is rather different. According to the reliable transfer correspondent, Manchester City internally regard Enzo Maresca—the former Chelsea and Leicester manager—as their ideal replacement.

"I said it in January, I said it in February, I said it in March, and I am saying it again today," Romano declared on his YouTube channel. "The manager that Manchester City internally believe is the ideal candidate to take over whenever Pep Guardiola decides to leave is Enzo Maresca."

Romano stressed that City remain entirely content with Guardiola, who has one year remaining on his contract. The decision to move on rests entirely with Pep. Should that moment arrive—whether this summer or in 2027—Maresca is the name the club has locked in their sights.

"Other reports have mentioned other managers, but my information is Maresca," Romano added. "City's appreciation for him is absolutely confirmed." He also clarified that Maresca was never seriously considered for the Manchester United or Tottenham positions, despite speculation at the time.
