Guardiola Opens Door for Foden's Atletico Madrid Exit as City Weigh £78m Bid

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has given the nod for Phil Foden to depart the Etihad Stadium this summer, with Atletico Madrid reportedly lining up a move for the England winger.

The academy product has warmed the bench considerably in recent weeks, hooked after 58 minutes during the Southampton success, and his statistics paint a damning picture: just a single assist and no goals across his last 26 outings for club and country.

Spanish reports now suggest Guardiola is prepared to sanction Foden's exit, with Atletico Madrid preparing to table an offer worth €90m (£78m). The Madrid outfit are hunting for a fresh attacking focal point following Antoine Griezmann's announcement that he will join Orlando City.

Foden's struggles stand in stark contrast to his scintillating form earlier in the campaign. Between November and December, he rattled in six goals across five matches—the kind of output that has convinced Atletico he could reignite his career in La Liga.

According to Spanish sources, Atletico view Foden as the ideal candidate to fill the void left by Griezmann's departure. However, Manchester Evening News chief City correspondent Simon Bajkowski believes Foden's immediate priority lies elsewhere. "He looks like he needs a break rather than a World Cup this summer," Bajkowski wrote, highlighting the toll that a relentless run of matches took on the winger's form.

Bajkowski noted that Foden's contract negotiations were progressing earlier in the season, though his dramatic dip in performance has complicated matters. "It's been another strange season," he reflected, "and it should not be forgotten that he was outstanding between September and December to the point where he was played and played and played. That toll of minutes seemed to grind down the fresh edge that he had rediscovered."
