Guardiola Refuses to Concede Title Race After West Ham Stalemate

Manchester City's Premier League ambitions took another hit on Saturday, with the champions unable to break down West Ham and settling for a 1-1 draw. The result leaves them nine points adrift of Arsenal, who strengthened their position by beating Everton.

Despite back-to-back draws and what most observers consider a title race effectively over, Pep Guardiola remains defiant. The City boss rejected suggestions his side's challenge has fizzled out, pointing to the fact they still have a game in hand and a home fixture against Arsenal to come.

"It's not over. Who said that? We didn't lose. We will continue," Guardiola declared. "Nine points is a lot against Arsenal but it happened. We have the game at home so we have to try until the end. When it is not possible then we congratulate the champion but we have to try."

The City manager acknowledged his squad's quality and commitment, but pinpointed a recurring issue that has haunted their campaign. Despite creating numerous chances, City have failed to translate dominance into victories often enough.

"We didn't score enough goals. It happened a thousand times for this team in the last decade but this season we struggled," he explained. "You need the spark in the final third with your players. To win the Premier League you need to be more consistent. In the past we had the consistency to win and win and win, to always find a way. This season, not scoring goals for the amount of chances we've created, we've been punished."

Guardiola also took responsibility for his team selection against West Ham, specifically regretting his decision to leave summer recruit Rayan Cherki on the bench. He conceded the call was a mistake, attributing it to concerns about tactical balance rather than a lack of faith in the winger's quality.

"Now you can criticise me incredibly, for the selection, now I deserve it," he admitted. "It's sometimes for the balance. We learned in the beginning that when we played Erling with Jeremy or Cherki that we are incredibly unbalanced, we do not have the stability that teams in the Premier League have to have."

Guardiola highlighted that Cherki's impact from the bench had been impressive, but explained his preference for alternatives in the starting XI. He suggested that Semenyo and Nico O'Reilly provide greater defensive stability when deployed in wide positions, though he acknowledged the team is still evolving in how best to deploy its attacking talent.

"It's a team that is growing. From the beginning we've grown a lot but still it is not finished business," he said. "I will not say that I don't love playing with Rayan, especially when he came from the bench, always the impact is unbelievable. But I'm finding still the best way to have stability and consistency in the team."

City's problems extend beyond the Premier League. They trail Real Madrid 3-0 on aggregate heading into their Champions League round-of-16 second leg next week, leaving them facing likely European elimination.
