Rooney Backs City to Edge Arsenal Showdown as Title Race Tightens

Wayne Rooney has thrown his weight behind Manchester City to edge Arsenal in what could prove the defining moment of the Premier League title race.

The former United skipper's prediction comes after City seized on Arsenal's stumble against Bournemouth to dramatically narrow the gap at the summit. The Cherries shocked the Gunners with a 2-1 victory at the Emirates on Saturday, courtesy of Alex Scott's strike in the 16th minute from time, before City's ruthless response saw them dismantle Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge the following day. Nico O'Reilly, Marc Guehi and Jeremy Doku all found the net as Guardiola's outfit cut Arsenal's lead to just six points.

With a game in hand and the chance to face Arteta's men at the Emirates next Sunday, City suddenly find themselves in the driving seat.

Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney didn't mince words about the magnitude of the encounter. "Yeah, I think it will be a title decider," he said. "It's an important game and if City win, I make them favourites to win the league. If Arsenal win, it's there's for the taking. It probably is a title decider."

As for his specific prediction, Rooney plumped for a narrow City victory. "I think Man City will win, 1-0. It still won't be done if that happens but it slightly gives City the advantage."

The Old Trafford legend also offered his take on Arsenal's recent dip in form, attributing it to the mounting pressure of a title challenge. "I think it's just the pressure of trying to win the Premier League," he explained. "We know how important experience is at this stage of the season and they've got quite a few players who haven't won titles so that pressure does build up. You have a couple of bad results and you start searching for answers and now they're struggling to get out of it."

Despite Arsenal's wobble, Rooney believes they remain genuine contenders. "I still think Arsenal have a great chance to win the league but they're starting to show signs that they're cracking a little bit and Man City know how to win league titles."

Guardiola, meanwhile, was satisfied with his side's demolition of Chelsea but refused to get carried away. The City manager acknowledged Arsenal's quality while insisting his squad must maintain their focus on the road ahead.

"The second half was extraordinary because we had the mindset," Guardiola said. "It wasn't tactics. We know each other for a long time and the players showed a good mentality to win here, which is never easy."

The Catalan boss stressed the importance of rest and recovery following City's Champions League exit. "We have long weeks now we are out of Champions League. We are more fresh, in training, everyone knows exactly what they have to do."

Guardiola made it clear that Arsenal represent City's primary challenge, describing them as the standout side in English football and Europe this season. "They have been the best team in this country, in Europe, so far. Beating Arsenal once is so difficult, imagine beating them twice in a few weeks. We have to rest."

He also urged City's supporters to get behind the team from the first whistle. "I would like to say to my fans – respect Arsenal a lot, they are an extraordinary team. Come to join us from minute one because the players will do the maximum."

The City boss credited his squad's mentality and the club's recruitment for their ability to compete at the highest level. "The mentality of the group. The hierarchy gave me the mentality of amazing players. That is the key to success. Winning a lot in modern times is so complicated. We have a chance to prove ourselves again next week."
