Maguire Backs Amorim for Future Success While Praising Carrick's Transformation

Harry Maguire has thrown his support behind Ruben Amorim, insisting the Portuguese tactician possesses the quality to thrive elsewhere despite his struggles at Old Trafford.

The United skipper's comments come as Manchester United have surged under interim boss Michael Carrick following Amorim's sacking in January. The Portuguese coach departed amid widespread criticism over his tactical approach and questionable squad management, most notably his decision to freeze out Kobbie Mainoo—a player who has flourished since returning to the fold under Carrick's stewardship.

Maguire, who featured regularly during Amorim's tenure when available, refused to condemn the former manager. "I think he's got great ideas," the defender told The Mirror. "The ideas just didn't work at Manchester United. I do believe he'll go on and have an amazing career, and his next club he'll probably go and win many, many football matches."

The 31-year-old acknowledged that responsibility for the failure must be shared among the playing squad, but insisted Amorim deserves recognition for his efforts in reshaping the squad architecture. "He has led the club in a direction, and I do think he deserves a lot of credit for that, where he's built a good, solid squad," Maguire explained.

United have recovered dramatically under Carrick, now sitting third in the Premier League and well-positioned to secure Champions League football for next season. Maguire was effusive in his praise for the interim manager, highlighting both his communication skills and tactical acumen.

"Carrick coming in, he's been amazing. He speaks really, really well. He's tactically very, very good," Maguire said. "He's brought in some amazing staff. Steve Holland, amazing to bring his experience in and someone he can lean on."

The defender also highlighted the coaching expertise added to the backline, with Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans providing invaluable support to the club's younger defenders.

With seven matches remaining, Maguire believes Carrick has earned consideration for the permanent role alongside other candidates, though he stressed the importance of finishing the campaign strongly. He acknowledged the summer will prove crucial, with significant recruitment needed to strengthen the squad across both playing and management departments.

"It's going to be a big recruitment in the management department, and I'm sure that the hierarchy will get it right," Maguire concluded.
