Alonso Standing By for Liverpool Opportunity as Slot's Position Comes Under Scrutiny

Xabi Alonso is reportedly prepared to step into the Liverpool hotseat if Arne Slot finds himself out the door, according to reports emerging amid growing uncertainty around the Anfield manager's future.

The Spanish tactician was dismissed by Real Madrid last week, with Alvaro Arbeloa taking the reins at the La Liga giants. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp is being touted as Alonso's long-term replacement come the summer transfer window.

The pressure is mounting on Slot, who delivered the Premier League title in his maiden campaign but has seen Liverpool's form deteriorate significantly this season. The Reds sit fourth in the table, having drawn four consecutive matches that have allowed them to slip 14 points adrift of Arsenal, who currently top the standings.

While Liverpool's hierarchy are believed to be reluctant to make a managerial change mid-season, there is an acceptance that Slot's tenure could end come July if the current trajectory persists. The emergence of Alonso as an available option has only intensified speculation surrounding the 56-year-old's position.

Spanish media outlet Marca has suggested the coming months represent "calm" for Alonso "unless Liverpool comes calling". The publication notes that Alonso is unafraid of mid-season challenges, having previously taken charge of Bayer Leverkusen after Gerardo Seoane's departure. However, a summer move to a new club remains the most probable scenario.

Marca further reported that Alonso's agent, Iñaki Ibáñez—who also represents Fede Valverde and Sergi Iraola—is likely to field interest from multiple Premier League suitors. Whilst Manchester United have Michael Carrick in temporary charge, the Old Trafford post would be complicated by the historic rivalry between the two clubs. Bayern Munich, another of Alonso's former employers, remains a possibility, though Vincent Kompany appears to be settling into that role.
