Liverpool's January Gamble: Pennant Warns of Season-Ending Injuries While Pearce Eyes Opportunistic Deals

The debate over Liverpool's transfer inactivity is intensifying, with former winger Jermaine Pennant urging the club to dip into the market or face a season-derailing injury crisis.

After splashing over £400m on summer signings following Arne Slot's Premier League title triumph, Liverpool have stumbled this campaign. Sitting 14 points adrift of Arsenal after 21 matches, the Reds' title defence has unravelled far faster than anyone at Anfield anticipated.

The Athletic's David Ornstein reported this week that Liverpool have no intention of securing cover for injured defenders, with the club content to leave themselves light on bodies. Conor Bradley's recent Arsenal injury has left them particularly exposed at right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong the only direct alternative, though Ornstein suggested other squad members could shuffle into the role if required.

According to Ornstein's reporting, Liverpool are deliberately "keeping their powder dry" ahead of summer business, with central defence earmarked as a priority for the next window rather than this one.

Pennant isn't having it. Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Liverpool man expressed his frustration at what he sees as reckless squad management. "I'm very disappointed hearing that Liverpool won't be signing a right-back, not even exploring a loan option," he said. "Fair enough if you don't want to spend big money, but some cover—even just someone for the bench—seems essential."

The 38-year-old stressed the precarious nature of Liverpool's situation. With injuries mounting, a stretched squad, and a fixture list that won't ease up, Pennant warned that one more casualty could prove catastrophic across all competitions. "If we get one more injury that could really destroy our season in every way, shape and form," he said. "I don't know how they can sit there and say everything is fine."

Yet there's a glimmer of hope. Liverpool journalist James Pearce, speaking to the Walk On podcast, suggests the club's stance isn't quite as rigid as it appears. Rather than a complete embargo on January business, Pearce indicates Liverpool are simply waiting for the "right opportunity" to materialise.

"I don't think it's as cut and dry as they won't do business this month," Pearce explained. "It's more that if the right opportunity comes up, they'll move for it. But at the minute, they don't see it."

With the window already halfway through, Pearce's comments suggest Liverpool's inactivity reflects a lack of suitable targets rather than a blanket refusal to trade. Under Michael Edwards' tenure as sporting director, the club has consistently avoided panic buys and short-term patches. That philosophy appears to remain intact—though whether it proves wise if injuries continue piling up remains the burning question.
