Arsenal Set to Stretch Lead as Liverpool Poised to Punish Struggling City

The Premier League title picture could shift dramatically this weekend, with Arsenal positioned to pull further clear at the summit while Manchester City face a stern examination at Anfield.

The Gunners hold a commanding six-point buffer and entertain high-flying Sunderland on Saturday before City travel to Liverpool 24 hours later. Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes both fixtures will play out emphatically in favour of the respective leaders.

"Arsenal win comfortably. Manchester City could get thumped by Liverpool away at Anfield," Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT.

Arsenal have established themselves as genuine title favourites, boasting impressive credentials across multiple competitions. They topped their Champions League group phase with a perfect eight wins from eight, will face Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round, and have already secured a Carabao Cup final spot against City themselves. In the Premier League, the numbers stack up too: second in the form table with three wins and two draws from their last six, top of the second-half standings, and a formidable record of 14 wins and just one defeat when scoring first.

There's a genuine possibility Arsenal could lead by nine points come Sunday evening, depending on results elsewhere.

City, meanwhile, have stuttered badly in recent weeks, claiming just one victory from their last six league outings. Agbonlahor highlighted their recent performance against Leeds away and their defensive solidity in the Carabao Cup meeting with Chelsea as evidence they possess the quality to trouble Liverpool, but suggested the gap between the two sides has widened considerably.

"I don't see a title race. I see Arsenal starting to stretch their lead now," he added.

Aston Villa lurk just a point behind City but have lost consecutive home matches without scoring, raising serious questions about their title credentials heading into a trip to Bournemouth. A top-four finish would represent a fine season for Unai Emery's side, though their recent form suggests the championship conversation belongs to Arsenal.

Manchester United's involvement in the title race could hinge entirely on this weekend's fixtures. Currently 12 points adrift, a victory over Tottenham combined with a City defeat would haul them to within three points of the summit. For Liverpool, a win would see them climb to within five of City.
