Murphy Makes Case for Liverpool to Pursue Real Madrid's Valverde as Next Big Signing

Liverpool have received a pointed reminder that their midfield could use an injection of commanding leadership, with former club favourite Danny Murphy suggesting Federico Valverde represents the ideal solution—if the Reds can somehow prise him away from the Bernabeu.

The case for bolstering the engine room comes despite Liverpool's midfield arguably representing their most stable department this season, yet Real Madrid's continued circling around Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai suggests the future stability of that unit cannot be taken for granted.

Valverde, meanwhile, finds himself in the unusual position of being pursued more actively by Manchester United at present, with Spanish outlets reporting in February that the 27-year-old has fielded a £114m offer from Old Trafford—one the Uruguay international would reportedly accept under certain conditions. Yet Murphy reckons Liverpool should be the ones making the running.

Speaking in association with Spreadex Sports, the former Anfield midfielder championed Valverde as a rare breed: a midfielder capable of commanding respect through sheer physicality, leadership and completeness of play. The comparison to Gerrard proved unavoidable.

"You want someone in the middle who leads," Murphy explained. "Someone everyone looks up to. A bit like Szoboszlai has managed this season. I always watch Valverde at Madrid. If Liverpool could get him, he's the lot. He's as near to Gerrard as I've seen—the athleticism, the ability to do everything. He's not quite Gerrard, but he's phenomenal."

The catch, naturally, is substantial. Murphy himself acknowledged the near-impossibility of the task, noting that even a nine-figure investment might struggle to shift Real's vice-captain.

"They might not be able to get him out," Murphy conceded. "But someone of that calibre—who walks through the door and delivers immediately—carries no real risk, even at £100 million."

That valuation, however, likely sits beneath what Real Madrid would actually demand. A figure approaching £120m would be required to even prompt serious consideration from the Spanish giants.

Valverde himself has shown little inclination to entertain an exit. In a recent interview with Marca, the midfielder expressed contentment with his lot at the Bernabeu, emphasising his pride at wearing the captain's armband and his commitment to continuous improvement alongside his teammates and coaching staff.

The Liverpool owners FSG have already committed over £400million to recruitment this past summer, with marquee signings including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Whether they possess the appetite—or the financial flexibility—to launch another blockbuster raid on continental football remains to be seen.
