Liverpool Sack Slot After One Title: Iraola Emerges as Clear Successor

Liverpool have made the shock decision to terminate Arne Slot's tenure as head coach with immediate effect, the club confirmed on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement released by the Anfield hierarchy, they explained: "The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team's trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach."

The club added that Slot departs "with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield."

It marks a dramatic reversal of position for Liverpool's hierarchy. Despite mounting pressure throughout the 2025/26 campaign—marked by disappointing results and a style of play that had gradually eroded supporter backing—the club had publicly insisted they would retain Slot after securing Champions League qualification, even without silverware beyond his debut season's league crown.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the shift stems from two key factors. The club now wants to establish a more front-foot, aggressive and urgent style of football, and they believe they have identified the right candidate to implement that vision. The swift decision to move in the off-season was also designed to avoid disruption to pre-season preparations.

Slot only learned of his dismissal on Saturday morning, Jacobs reports.

The recruitment process is already underway, with Andoni Iraola identified as the leading contender. Liverpool's primary objective is to appoint someone whose football aligns with their preferred playing style criteria.

Only a handful of names are being seriously considered, with Sebastian Hoeneß and Pierre Sage also among those evaluated. However, Iraola stands as the clear frontrunner for the role, with talks expected to accelerate rapidly.

Further changes to the coaching staff are also anticipated as the club embarks on this new chapter.
