Forget the headlines about Darwin Nunez making a surprise return to Anfield. Liverpool have firmly shut the door on that particular fantasy this summer, despite earlier reports suggesting the Uruguay striker could rejoin the club from Al-Hilal on a free transfer.

Speculation had mounted after Mundo Deportivo claimed the Reds were eyeing Nunez as a "low-cost option," with the striker allegedly reaching an agreement to terminate his Saudi contract by mutual consent. Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero subsequently doubled down, insisting the deal was essentially done and would be confirmed once the World Cup dust had settled.

Not so, according to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke. The journalist flatly stated that Liverpool "are not currently in the race" to bring Nunez back, with the club instead concentrating on other attacking targets. "I think it's a bit of a pie in the sky that one," O'Rourke said on the Football Insider podcast, suggesting that letting Nunez leave for Saudi Arabia only to retrieve him a year later simply isn't part of the plan.

Fabrizio Romano has also poured cold water on the speculation, reporting that sources close to the striker's camp have explicitly denied any ongoing negotiations with Liverpool. "There's nothing ongoing with Nunez and Liverpool," Romano stated, with those in the player's circle dismissing the transfer chatter entirely.

Newcastle remain interested in Nunez's services, though Premier League interest appears limited beyond that.

What is clear, however, is that Liverpool intend to splash the cash this summer. According to O'Rourke, the Reds will spend over £250 million as they pursue a title challenge under their ex-Bournemouth manager.

That spending is likely to focus on replacing Mohamed Salah, who is set to depart this summer. Yan Diomande has emerged as Liverpool's primary target to fill that void. The club may also seek further reinforcement in attack following last season's acquisitions of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
