Van Hecke snubs Liverpool for Spurs move as De Zerbi connection proves decisive

Liverpool's hopes of landing Jan Paul van Hecke have been dashed, with the Brighton defender having set his sights firmly on Tottenham Hotspur instead.

The Reds were among several top-flight clubs monitoring the 26-year-old Netherlands international, who enters the final year of his contract at the Amex. The North London club are preparing a third offer and have already agreed personal terms with the defender, who has worked extensively with Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi during their time together at Brighton. That existing rapport has proved the decisive factor—Van Hecke has reportedly become enthusiastic about the prospect of reuniting with the Italian boss and has now resolved that Tottenham is his destination.

According to reports, Van Hecke is determined to seal the move swiftly, keen to arrive at his new club with his future settled before international commitments loom large.

Fellow Netherlands centre-back Micky van de Ven, already at Tottenham, has been doing his bit to encourage the transfer. "I did speak briefly with Jan Paul about Tottenham," Van de Ven said. "I think it represents a good opportunity for him."

Even national team manager Ronald Koeman has weighed in on the situation. When pressed on Van Hecke's impending switch, Koeman acknowledged the complexities: "Ideally, a player should have peace of mind about his club and clarity regarding his future," the Dutch boss reflected. "But I cannot prevent it."
