Romano: Liverpool Hold Firm on Gakpo as Spurs Circle

Tottenham's interest in Cody Gakpo remains genuine, but Liverpool are showing no signs of budging on their Dutch winger this summer, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
Roberto De Zerbi has identified Gakpo as a key target as he looks to bolster Spurs' flanks during the transfer window. Tottenham have made preliminary enquiries with Liverpool to gauge what it might take to prise the 27-year-old away from Anfield, particularly given his impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup.
However, Romano's latest assessment suggests the Merseyside outfit remain undecided internally and are not currently entertaining the prospect of selling. Speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday evening, the journalist explained: "There is an appreciation from Tottenham for Cody Gakpo. That's true. He is one of the players they appreciate."
But crucially, Romano stressed the ball remains firmly in Liverpool's court. "This story about Cody Gakpo completely depends on what Liverpool want to do. Liverpool are yet to decide anything. At the moment, they are not opening doors to his exit," he said.
The club's new manager Andoni Iraola will work alongside the hierarchy to formulate a plan regarding Gakpo's future. With Liverpool pleased by his World Cup showing, there appears little urgency to cash in. "At the moment, the doors are not open, so Liverpool are not negotiating for an exit of Gakpo. There is interest from Tottenham, but waiting to understand what Liverpool will decide to do for the Dutch winger," Romano concluded.
Journalist Pete O'Rourke offered additional context on the Transfer Insider podcast on June 20, noting that Gakpo endured a disappointing campaign last season. The arrival of Victor Munoz will intensify competition for places on Liverpool's left flank, a position where Gakpo operates.
"I don't think Liverpool are actively looking to sell Gakpo, but if a big offer did come in for him, it's something they might consider," O'Rourke suggested. "They could use it to bolster their squad elsewhere."
De Zerbi clearly rates the Dutchman highly, though Spurs do possess alternative options should a deal prove unattainable. For now, Liverpool's reluctance to negotiate appears the decisive factor.
