Murphy Backs Bowen as Low-Risk Salah Alternative for Liverpool's Summer Rebuild

Liverpool face the unenviable task of finding a successor to Mohamed Salah this summer, with the Egyptian's departure on a free transfer confirmed. While his performances have dipped significantly from his status as a Premier League elite last season, replacing him remains a thorny proposition—and not just on the pitch.

Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy reckons the answer might be staring them in the face at West Ham. With Jarrod Bowen's 20 Premier League goal involvements unable to prevent the Hammers' drop to the Championship, Murphy believes the England international could provide exactly what Slot's side requires without breaking the bank.

"I wouldn't be disappointed seeing him at Liverpool," Murphy told talkSPORT. "He's got goals in him, he's got assists, he's durable. I think he's good enough."

The catch? Bowen doesn't fit Liverpool's typical recruitment template. His age and limited resale value would represent a departure from the Merseysiders' established strategy. Yet Murphy argues that's precisely why the move makes sense financially.

Securing top-tier talent on the right flank would ordinarily demand £50m to £80m, Murphy points out. With West Ham relegated, however, the fee could plummet to £20m or £30m—potentially even lower if Bowen is keen to escape. At that price, the former Liverpool player sees virtually no downside.

"Then it's no risk," Murphy concluded.

The pundit did, however, draw a line at handing Bowen the No.11 shirt vacated by Salah. While he'd defer to the player's preference, Murphy suggests it needn't be a priority concern. He's equally keen on alternatives like Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, should PSG's Georgian winger prove persuadable, though he acknowledges few compare to Salah's output.

Bowen won't replicate those numbers—they're simply extraordinary—but his Premier League pedigree and proven consistency offer something tangible. For Liverpool juggling multiple pressing issues across the pitch, a settled solution on the wing could prove the wise move.
